The term 'Speciesism' refers to 'bigotry' or a specific ignorance (a generalized exansion of 'racism')except towards other species. In much the same way that other races, classes or what-have-you can be biased against the 'other' - and so it goes too, with 'other species'. It is only recently that a significant (but not large) percentage of people could be convinced that 'animals' actually have 'feelings' (like pain, fear, happiness, hate, lust, etc). This fact alone is a remarkable testament to the 'Speciesist' nature of humanity. Social Identity Theory has laid much of the groundwork - suggesting that people tend overwhelmingly to 'identify' with (here defined as 'having empathy for') only those 'species more closely resembling our own. In order to actually advance as our own species - to the point of being able to respect other species to the point required to be able to live in balance with them and live a sustainable life on the planet- it is a critical step we must take. Please help take that step and help eradicate Speciesism and objectification in all it's forms...!!
Hatice Guleryuz is an artist currently living and working in Los Angeles. Her current work and her message is single-mindedly political - "If we’re going to call ourselves a civilized society, we’ll need to resist and conquer the illusory speciesist divisions promoted by greedy political and commercial interests." This goes far beyond veganism or preventing animal cruelty- but she applies it to every level of the planet's biosphere. It's also political in the human sense. She believes also by respecting all people - especially those different from ourselves, we prevent alienation, objectification and especially the inevitable - war - at it's root causes. It's about radical sustainability - and it's about time.
Hatice is currently engaged in projects with and for the Art Institute of Chicago, and other agencies in europe and the USA in forthcoming projects.
